Here's how to get your tax id number to start your small business.

If you are running a business that sells goods, you already know what a tax ID number is and may even already have one for your internet eBusiness.  For new eBusiness owners you need one and here's how to obtain one for your new business.

  A Federal Tax ID number is also called an Employer Identification Number (EIN), and is an identifying number assigned to businesses by the IRS. It is used to identify your business for federal and state agencies that regulate businesses, for home and Online or land based businesses.

 

 

Do I Need a Tax Identification Number?

Generally, any business that offers goods for sale, that are taxed, must get a business tax ID number. If the state your business is located in taxes services, or if you collect sales taxes, you will most likely need a tax ID number. As mentioned above, many agencies will require either a social security number or a tax ID number.

Almost any business that has employees or pays taxes will need a business tax ID. Generally, you should obtain one. It’s simple and easy to get.

 

You Need The Following  Tax Id Numbers:

  1.  All businesses need a business tax id registration number also called a business license.
  2. All businesses that want to buy wholesale ( i.e., buy without paying taxes), or sell retail and collect taxes,  need a State Sales Tax Id Number also called a seller's permit or resale tax id number.
  3. All businesses that have employees, need a federal tax id number ( also called an irs number) and a state employer tax id number.
  4. All businesses are advised to get a federal tax id number and use it as a business id number.  Note that a federal tax id number is also a federal employer number as well as a business id number.
  5. All corporations, partnerships, and llcs, are required to get a federal tax id number to use as a business tax id ( though, even sole proprietors can use it as a business tax id number if they so choose).

  Many merchant account holding banks, business account banks and other financial institutions require a tax ID in order to open an account with them. Tax ID’s can also keep your social security information private because same business to business suppliers that want a tax ID will also accept personal social security and banking information and it is used unless the business has a business tax ID.

 

How Do I Obtain a Tax Identification Number?

The form you will need to complete and return is available here online. The form can be accessed and filled out in one of four ways by either downloading the form and sending it via fax, mail, by phone or applying via the Web.

 Apply by Phone:

  • Business owners can also obtain a tax ID by calling the Business Tax Line,  between the hours of 9:00 a.m. - 5:00 p.m. Pacific time, Monday through Friday. A phone representative takes the information, assigns the tax ID, and provides the number over the telephone.

Apply by Mail:

  • It akes the longest between 3 - 4 weeks to receive via mail once the Form has been completed and mailed to the address.
